We funded research by Geeta Seshu and Urvashi Sarkar to study the killings of and attacks on journalists in India between 2014–2019, and the justice delivery in these cases. Published in December 2019 by Counter Currents.
We made an award to neuroscientist and author, Dr. Sumaiya Shaikh, to support her fact-checking claims related to evidence-based medicine.
Soon after the AYUSH ministry first released its advisory for preventing SARS-CoV-2 infection with Homeopathy and Unani formulations on 29 Jan 2020, Alt News Science had published two investigative pieces to counter this misinformation. To counter against homeopathy for COVID-19, we published “No, homeopathic drug ‘Arsenicum album 30’ cannot prevent Coronavirus infection, as claimed by AYUSH ministry and “AYUSH ministry’s claim that Unani practices can prevent coronavirus infection is false” against Unani herbs.
Soon after COVID-19 misinformation on WhatsApp took over with various viral messages falsely attributed to UNICEF giving false information on the virus size, its lifespan, and that it can’t survive in warm temperatures and claims about gargling with warm saltwater. This, and related claims were debunked in a series of articles titled “Sci-check: Coronavirus advisory falsely attributed to UNICEF viral on social media, “Sci-check: Do masks help to prevent the spread of coronavirus? and “Sci-check: Lifespan of coronavirus outside the human body on different surfaces.
Thereafter, when the misinformation about gargling saltwater resurfaced with claims about vinegar, it was addressed in a Hindi article “साइंस-चेक: गर्म पानी में नमक या सिरका कोरोना वायरस ख़त्म नहीं करता, इस अफ़वाह से बचिए” due to the demographics of the people who consumed vernacular misinformation. Many people were skeptical about the efficacy of washing hands which was addressed in an article titled “Thorough hand-washing with an ordinary soap is effective in killing coronavirus (COVID-19)”
A viral message attributed to partly fictitious medical experts was viral with claims that Vitamin C can cure COVID-19 bundled with misinformation on cancer and HIV which was debunked in the investigative piece titled “No, Vitamin C and lemon-infused hot water do not protect against coronavirus or cancer”
Several viral claims related to exaggerated effects of the Janta curfew as a 14 hr period to kill the coronavirus on surfaces by the Mr Modi were addressed in an article titled “Social distancing is imperative but 14-hour ‘Janta curfew’ will not break the cycle of infection” Several claims related to genetic superiority of Indians in dealing with COVID-19 were around. Of note was a livemint Op-Ed that cited another dubious article by Nature Asia which misinterpreted the research on the genetic variation of certain immune cells in South Asians population as ‘immune-resistant’. This was debunked in a detailed investigative piece “Indians do not have genetic protection against coronavirus, published research incorrectly interpreted”.
When Ramdev came out with Coronil in National media touting it as a cure for COVID-19, the various claims on the evidence were addressed in a swift investigative piece “Coronil lacks scientific basis as a cure for COVID-19 based on evidence shared by Patanjali.”
An Ayurved called Parameshwar Arora going around in the streets with a microphone speaking to residents from the rooftop of his Audi that COVID-19 could be cured through various home remedies. He was sensationalised by various news platforms, we debunked his claims in detail in the piece titled “Home remedies by Ayurved Parameshwar Arora: Are they effective in curing coronavirus?”
With Coronil making a switch from cure to immunity booster, there has been a hype in everyone jumping the bandwagon. AYUSH ministry’s promotion of ‘immunity boosters’ was debunked. First with Arsenicum Album 30, which was promoted by citing a review article that doesn't prove efficacy in protecting against infectious diseases, was debunked in an article titled “Homeopathic drugs such as Arsenicum Album 30, promoted by AYUSH, do not boost immunity against COVID”. Later their promotion of Ayush Kwath/Kaadha was thoroughly debunked in a piece titled “AYUSH Kwath or Kadha cannot ‘boost’ immunity to fight against COVID-19”.
